The much awaited 1st T20 international match between India and South Africa was played at The New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on 18th February.
South Africa won the toss and chose to field.
With Suresh Raina’s comeback in focus and a stellar 5-1 ODI series win, India looked confident stepping into the last leg of their South Africa tour.
A good start, Shikhar Dhawan’s powerful knock of 72 off just 39 balls, and an overall good batting performance by the team took India to an intimidating total of 203/5 in 20 overs.
Junior Dala claimed 2 wickets.
South Africa Innings
As the Proteas began the chase, Reeza Hendricks fought a lone battle with a 70 off 50 balls. While Farhaan Behardien (39 off 27 balls) and Heinrich Klaasen (16 off 8) attempted to take the score ahead, the innings was eventually concluded in 20 overs with 175/9 on the scoreboard for South Africa.
India won the match by 28 runs.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who stole the show with his clever bowling and a 5-wicket haul, was named the Player of the Match. Praises showered in from all sides for his knuckleball.
India continued their brilliant performance in the first T20 against a side that seemed considerably weakened by the absence of AB de Villiers who was ruled out of the T20 series owing to a knee injury.
India currently lead the T20 series 1-0.
