‘Thanks for the memories’ – A look back at AB de Villiers’ glorious career

On 23rd May 2018, AB de Villiers left thousands of fans stunned as he announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket. As Twitter exploded with messages and well wishes, there was no doubt that AB de Villiers has been nothing short of a superhero to his fans. Nicknamed Mr. 360 for his spectacularly wide range of shots in all directions of the field, it seemed there was no shot this man couldn’t play and no catch that he couldn’t take.

Here’s a look back at some of the most memorable moments from AB de Villiers’ glorious career.

149 off 44 

Perhaps the most famous of all his records and a defining moment in his career is his record of the fastest 50 and teh fastest century in an ODI against West Indies in 2015. Scoring a half-century off 16 balls and going on to make a century off just 31 balls, he achieved these feats in the same match. He then went on to score 149 runs in 44 balls in that very match, as South Africa eventually won by 148 runs. With 9 fours and 16 sixes, he also holds a record for most sixes in an ODI innings along with Rohit Sharma.

Most catches in a test match by a wicketkeeper

Along with RC Russell, AB de Villiers holds the record for the most catches in a test match by a wicketkeeper. He took 11 catches in the test match against Pakistan at Johannesburg in 2013.

33 runs in 246 balls

During South Africa’s tour of Australia in November 2012, AB de Villiers put up a unique display of defensive batting while chasing a target of 430 in the second innings of a test match. He scored 33 runs in 220 balls on Day 5 of the test match and helped save the match for South Africa.

IPL Superhero

Having single-handedly taken his team to many victories, Mr. 360 has been an absolute superhero in the Indian Premier League. With five 100+ partnerships for the Royal Challengers Bangalore and two 200+ partnerships, he holds a unique record. In the eleventh season of the IPL, he surprised everyone with his acrobatic catch that was perhaps one of the best we have seen so far. [Watch the video here]

From being the second highest run-getter for South Africa in international cricket to maintaining the highest batting average in World Cups, AB has left his mark in all formats of cricket. As fans thank him for the memories, the list of memorable moments never ends – the world of cricket will sure miss his talent.
